A sunroof or panoramic roof pane sits in a tray with its own seals, drains and, on most vehicles, a powered shade and a cassette mechanism underneath. When the glass goes, the fragments land in that mechanism and in the cabin, and water finds the same path the next time it rains. Replacing the pane is half the job; clearing the tray and proving the drains still run is the other half.

Step 2: Strip and clear
The remaining glass is removed and the tray, cassette and cabin are vacuumed out so nothing is left to jam the mechanism.
Step 3: Fit the replacement
The new pane is set and sealed, and the shade and any powered mechanism are refitted and cycled.
Step 4: Prove the drains
The drains and seals are checked before handover, along with the operation of the roof and the shade.
